Chairman Thompson Statement on Trump’s Tweets Stoking Violence
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on President Trump’s tweets last night that were flagged by Twitter for glorifying violence.
“The President's late-night tweets were disgusting and dangerous. He will try again to walk them back, but the American people know what he did and Twitter is right to have flagged his tweets. He knew exactly what he was doing and did it on purpose. He took the opportunity to distract from his horrific pandemic response with over 100,000 Americans dead on his watch and decided it would be politically expedient for him to incite violence and stoke racial tensions. He acts this way too often to count.
“He is simply incapable of leading this country through a crisis. He has nothing but his political future and his eternal victimhood in mind. This is why he is a terrible President and will never be able to lead this country. If you are apologizing for Trump, you need to be honest about what you're doing. You're making excuses for glorifying violence against African Americans while pretending to use free speech as political cover.”
